Quantitative information on the changes in vegetation cover in different areas such as coastal zones, rangelands or tropical forests is required. Change in vegetation cover indicates the existance of mechanisms that cause processes such as erosion and accretion of sediments, desertification, deforestation and urbanization.

Therefore, reproducible and reliable techniques for monitoring vegetation cover are needed.
